Indications for Reprop® Clyster
Constipation and intestinal hypomotility
Most frequently, an enema is given because of acute or chronic constipation. In most of the cases, the administration of an enema is the best way to provide fast and gentle treatment for constipation. An enema involves introducing fluid via the anus into the rectum. The introduced water causes the feces to soften and liquefy. The filling and pressure increase in the rectum further stimulates the bowel movements.
Constipation is a taboo subject for many patients. For that reason, a patient often misses out on a medical examination or consultation. Frequently that results in an excessively early and recurrent use of laxative agents. People who take laxatives frequently accustom their bowels to this aid. Many of these laxatives only create the impression that they stimulate the bowel movements; but the emptying of the bowel is caused by extraction of fluid from the body and supplying this fluid to the feces. Sodium and potassium losses associated with constant administration of laxatives may lead to muscle weakness and intestinal hypomotility which may maintain constipation by itself. This mechanism applies for some herbal laxatives as well. Therefore, laxatives should only be used occasionally. The enema is a very gentle treatment for constipation, as the fluid is not extracted from the body but supplied from outside.
The treatment of constipation is often difficult for physicians. Laxatives can cause considerable side effects. With chronic constipation, they often are not effective any longer and if, they work at all, there is a delayed response. In such cases, patients with constipation sometimes suffer from abdominal pain for several days, often resulting in admission to a hospital where patients are given enemas to evacuate the bowel. With the Reprop® Clyster, the physician has now the opportunity to provide fast and gentle treatment for his/her patients.
Fecal incontinence
Other fields of application for Reprop® Clyster include controlled evacuations of the bowel in cases of fecal incontinence. Enemas are used for emptying and cleaning the rectum through regular washings. Thus, a complete evacuation of the large intestine is induced at a convenient time so that afterwards the patients usually do not have to expect any further fecal evacuations for several hours.
Flatulence
A further indication is the relief of flatulence. A large part of the population complains occasionally about increased gases in their intestinal tracts which manifest themselves as a sensation of fullness, bloating and discharge of gas. The enema reduces the gas-producing intestinal bacteria.
